Your knowledge is valuable, provided it can be found
Knowledge is one of the aspects that will make you valuable for a company. Your specific insight into a customer, use case or subject is invaluable to your colleagues and the customer. But information that is only on your laptop makes it hard to find and impossible to use this knowledge. They used to think of everything and one of those things was the intranet.
The intranet:
In the years 90 this was the solution against the fragmentation of information and the answer to the inaccessibility of knowledge. It was the first step towards a Army mailbox And a less full head. It became our goal to make everything available online, so nothing was lost. The promise was that your filing cabinet could be gone and you ring bindersed with the old paper. Since then we are working every day to save even more things. Everything that is important is stored on a disk, an intranet or in the mailbox. We have been storing things for almost 30 years and are now running into the following problem: we cannot find it anymore.
Meanwhile, the intranet is generally seen as part of the problem and no longer as the solution. Where did it go wrong?
Seek and thou shalt keep searching until you weigh us
The earlier intranet had the original purpose: informing. And although the intranet has since developed into a digital workplace, many organizations still use the old form. And that old intranet we are going to use as an online filing cabinet. The intranet has become a file server, a storage for office and PDF files, while an old intranet was never intended for it.
Whoever wants to find a file now uses the summary search function. Can't find it? Then send your colleague an email asking to email the file. This creates multiple copies of a file, with the result that you are never sure whether you are working in the most current document. In addition, the same question about that file is asked to your colleague several times. This applies not only to files, but also to topics or customers. Consequence: Everyone is busy answering the same requests several times a day.
The result is that you and your colleagues are still struggling with the same challenges you have been facing for years:
- Spending too much time searching for information and expertise
- Unnecessary hours of double efforts and reinventing the wheel, slowing innovation, decision-making and the time it takes to bring new ideas to market
